With 16 colleges to choose from, this is bound to be a good one. Each college definitely has their quirks (some better than others)! But, without further a do, here's our Durham University colleges ranking...
Durham University Colleges Ranking
16. College of St. Hild & Bede
If you're into being stranded miles away from pretty much everything, then Hild & Bede will be just perfect for you! It's actually a really scenic and lovely place, shame most of you reading this will never see it.
No. of students per year - 430
Year founded - 1839
Gowned formal dinners - No
Dining - Catered/Self-Catered
15. St. Aidan's College
Stairs, stairs and a lot more stairs. If you ask anyone about St. Aidan's, that's probably all you'll hear. But once you scale the mountain, it's a pretty friendly and relaxed place with not too much going on.
No. of students per year - 320
Year founded - 1947
Gowned formal dinners - No
Dining - Catered
14. St. John's College
St John's is known as the religious college, I'm not sure how true this is in the modern day, but it's something to keep in mind. Their bar is cozy to say the least, but it does the trick.
No. of students per year - 210
Year founded - 1909
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
13. St. Mary's College
Hands down, the most picturesque spot in the city, it's amazing. As you wander the grounds, you'll be in awe of the place. Until you step inside, it's pretty dated and totally cramped. Worst of all, they have a piano that everyone thinks they know how to play for some reason.
No. of students per year - 350
Year founded - 1899
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered/Self-Catered
12. Grey College
'Grey' College pretty much sums it up, there's not much to it. If all the other bars are too busy on the hill, at least you'll be able to get a drink in Grey.
No. of students per year - 410
Year founded - 1959
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
11. Trevelyan College
Trevs have a thing where all the buildings are in the shape of hexagons, it's something different. The bar is spacious and the location is a nice distance in between the university and the city. Trevs has earned a solid 11th.
No. of students per year - 300
Year founded - 1966
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
10. George Stephenson College
The whole college is train themed, which is pretty sad. But I've got to say I'm a fan of their whole setup. The bar is big and open, they've got pool, table tennis, darts and a big projector screen. It's as far from the city as you can get though.
Seems as though. your self-catered at Stevo, here's some meal ideas.
No. of students per year - 450
Year founded - 1965
Gowned formal dinners - No
Dining - Self-Catered
9. Van Mildert College
The one next to the lake.
No. of students per year - 480
Year founded - 1965
Gowned formal dinners - No
Dining - Catered
Sorry. A bit more about Mildert: The bar always has a great atmosphere and you can't go wrong with their toastie bar. They do have one of the greatest college drinks, trust me.
8. South College
South is pretty much brand new. If you're looking for a more typical uni experience rather than a tiny 500 year old building on the Bailey. South might just be for you.
No. of students per year - 380
Year founded - 2020
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Self-Catered
7. John Snow College
Like South, but with a bit more history in character. Bit of a random place I guess. Started off in Stockton, then they took a trip to the mound and after a brief stint in the viaduct they found their permanent home next to South.
No. of students per year - 410
Year founded - 2001
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Self-Catered
6. St Cuthbert's Society
They call themselves "Society" rather than just "College" like everyone else, I've got no idea why and I'm not going to bother checking. Great spot for a little bit of karaoke though.
No. of students per year - 390
Year founded - 1888
Gowned formal dinners - No
Dining - Catered/Self-Catered
5. Josephine Butler College
Jobo's great. They're in a nice spot on top of the hill, the bars great and the accommodation is spacious. With Stevo as their neighbours too, they've sort of got 2 bars and 2 sets of people to hang out with.
No. of students per year - 420
Year founded - 2006
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Self-Catered
4. Hatfield College
Pretty much everyone hates Hatfield, apart from the people who go there. How weird! Filled with the poshest students that exist, Hatfield gets 4th place because their students seem to love it so much.
No. of students per year - 440
Year founded - 1846
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
3. St Chad's College
Chad's has the best bar, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Their outside courtyard is one of the best spots in Durham. Grab yourself a disco water and thank me later.
No. of students per year - 200
Year founded - 1904
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
2. University (Castle) College
I've got to admit, it's cool, it's literally out of Harry Potter. It's historical and it's what everyone expects from Durham. Castle bar is up there with the best too. One downside, not everyone actually lives in the 'castle' itself. Many people are piled into nearby newer accomodation.
No. of students per year - 460
Year founded - 1832
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Self-Catered
1. Collingwood College
The winner of our rankings (and also at every sport, at every level, in every league). The bar's huge and has a great outdoor area, they have their own astro, and their in a great position halfway up the hill. If you get into Collingwood, congratulations.
No. of students per year - 520
Year founded - 1959
Gowned formal dinners - Yes
Dining - Catered
